Robbie Diehl was a high school sophomore when he was diagnosed with Leukemia. Five months of hospitalization he struggled, and there was nothing we could do save visiting our close friend in the sanitary division of Midwestern Regional Medical Center in shoe booties and face masks, playing cards, watching tv… making plans. It’s a part of my past I often look at as a separate life; it didn’t seem real in the sense of fairness, and although at the time I believed it to be a rarity, it’s unfortunately an experience almost 50,000 Americans will share with me by the end of the year.
There is hope- and the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has been a leader for 50 years in support, advocacy, and scientific outreach for those learning to cope with their diseases. Each year they run a slew of events to drum up action for the cause, and each year an overwhelming number of Americans show their dedication to making the world a little better by devoting their time and their money to a worthy cause.
