Ben Stein’s scientific review of creationism in film format offered a private screening to those who reserved a seat. Apparently, however, that didn’t include Dr. Myers, regardless of his reservation for the whole family. The ironic bit being that, although he was removed from the premise, they failed to notice his buddy Richard Dawkins and allowed his entrance.

Criminal to remove any peaceful attendant to an event, regardless of it’s pay status, and an obvious blow to any open minded debate on the subject. I’d be more interested to know if it was a police officer or a rental cop that took orders; I’m hoping the latter, or we have a much bigger issue on our hands. I’ll have to see the movie and gauge if it’s worth taking Stein serious anymore…

http://areasonabledoubt.org/ discusses the same event in more detail; if you watch the trailer, you can see that the film is agitprop– any producer who censors his audience certainly isn’t making objective art. While I won’t go into the philosophy of science here, the film seems to frame its thesis under the guise of what looks like a Kuhnian scientific revolution– it’s just propaganda, and clearly ignorant of how science and scientific communities work together and learn collectively.

Scientific revolutions are based on facts that the scientific communities of the day may not be ready to accept, but can no longer ignore (think of Galileo)– not faith, or beliefs. Note that the first words of Stein’s monologue are “I believe” not “evidence suggests.”

As for Stein himself, I myseelf stopped being a fan back in 2001 when he visited my university and gave a talk– some quotes from the student newspaper here:

When asked what he thought about the retaliation against Arab Americans since the terrorist attacks, Stein said he had little sympathy for the group.

“Well, 6,500 people are being buried, and I can not afford to shed a tear for the Arabs that are feeling the backlash,” Stein said. “Arabs attacked this country, so I can’t be sympathetic toward any Arabs.”

Also, Stein’s partially joking response to a question asking why he believes Americans are hated in some countries elicited some negative student reactions.

“We are hated because of our freedom and our way of life,” Stein said. “And God, I hate Loyola food.”
